The 3-Day ~ An Amazing Experience September 15, 2009

Still too busy to get pics up (SORRY) but I did want to document my trip while it was still fresh in my mind.  Let me say this was one of the most amazing things I have every participated in, and I feel better for it.  I have something that will stay with me forever, and knowing that I made it…walked every single one of those sixty miles, makes me feel incredibly accomplished.

Day one started at about 4 am, meeting at our captains house then carpooling to Shoreline community college.  A few hours of standing around, feeling anxious and nervous, and then we were off!  Took a while to get going, and we were really lumped together. Taht and the fact we had had very little sleep the night before, made day on so tiring.   Finally get to camp after about 23 miles, and still have to find our bags, and set up our tents.  All we coudl think about was showering and going to bed, but still had to eat dinner.  Frankly, not much was said at dinner, as we were all out of energy.  Day two started around 5am, and we were part of the first group waiting for the course to open.  Warm weather and sunny skies were with us all day.  As was amazing community support.  From the army guys, to the church with the cookie buffet, to the neighborhood that erected a balloon arch, we were so loved and supported.  And to know that these people did this out of the goodness of their hearts, well, at one point brought me to tears.  Being tired, worn out, hot, dealing with blisters and sore over-worked muscles, and then having a hundred feet of people just cheering you on, saying how proud they are of you and thanking you…brings out some big emotions.  End of day two was brutal, my left calf and hamstring so tight and slightly injured.  My teammate Michelle was so great, put her hand on the small of my back and said, “come on, lets go.  Almost there.  You got this.  We can do it.”  And we did.  Coming back to camp on day two was great, you could hear the music first, cheering next, and then all the walkers who had already arrived shouting and clapping for you.  I knew I was so close, and yet I really wasn’t sure if I would make it.  With the help of my teammate, and the cheering of the crew and fellow walkers, tears streaming down my face, I made it.  Over an hour later, my team was the one to cheer on our last walker.  She had terrible shin-splints, and was barely making it.  We were prepared with ice packs, and every one of us cried with her as she pushed thru the pain, and joined her team.  Wow.

Day three, and we’re excited!  We got to walk thru Greenlake, have lunch at Gas Works, walk down by Pike Place, and finish at memorial Stadium in the Seattle Center.  Meagan and I hobbled behind, but our team for the most part stayed together.  We walked thru the tunnel of family and friends to the finish line, and it was totally sereal.  We had finished!  Closing Ceremony was beautiful, and as the survivors walked in together, surrounded by fellow-walkers, we each lifted one of our shoes in salute to their bravery.  This event raised over 5 million dollars for breast cancer research!  And I was a part of it.  Two days later, I’m still swimming in the experience.  Being cheered on and thanked for three days straight, it is alittle strange to be back to the real world, just a nobody.  I wore my pin, and my beads to work last night, and had a table of women who had walked in previous years thank me, and we talked experiences for just a bit.  Can’t believe it is behind me, and can’t believe I made it.

Thank you again, to all of you who supported the Rack Warriors both financially, and with kind words, encouraging words, high-fives, etc.  We needed each of you to make this happen.

Thank you.

Here We Go! September 10, 2009

First of all, how annoying is it when you finish something, just to find that the computer disagrees with the fact that it was ever written?? ARGGH

Anyway, the Rack Warriors leave at dawn to embark on our sixty mile journey.  We will be spending most of our time in the Everett area, sad to say we won’t be on the Eastside like they were last few years.  But, it will be great to spend some time in a place I haven’t beent to yet.  I feel pretty ready, not having done this before, Idon’t know exactly what to expect.  But I’ve been training for months, and I have an amazing team to keep me going.

Just got home from a whirlwind trip to DC, to photograph Courtney and Eric’s gorgeous wedding.  I can’t wait to get back and share some new images. The deadline for Seattle Bride magazine’s spring summer issue is upon us as well, and I have two submissions this time.  Both are beautiful, and I can’t wait to see if either is something they might be interesting in publishing.  I’ve had luck in the last two issues, so hopefully, third time’s a charm.

Please send all of your “happy feet” thoughts my way, and enjoy this weekend’s sunshine!

3-day, right around the corner August 28, 2009

The Seattle breast cancer 3-day is in two weeks!!!  Thousands of women and men, survivors and participants alike, will begin the three day, sixty mile journey.  My funds are raised, and I am doing my very best to continue training.  Honestly, I am not doing all I should be… with weddings, portrait sessions, senior portraits, and a super fun tiger cub encounter, I am having a really hard time finding training hours.  In fact, I should be out there right now, but I’m really enjoying editing the  wedding I shot last weekend.  The deadline for submitting images to be considered for publishing in Seattle Bride is near, and I already have a handful picked out.  I have two weddings I’ll be submitting, Jackie & Allan, and Kathleen and Jim.  One of my past weddings, Karen & Radu has a beautiful image in the “local weddings of note” section in the current issue of Seattle Bride.  Don’t be confused, they have that the photographer is Summer Hopkins Photography, NOT Summer Dawn Photography.  Minor mistake, but really, how many “Summer”s are shooting weddings in the Seattle area any way?  The two weddings I’m submitting this time are very different, and both so amazing.  I look forward to sharing some of my favorite images with you soon!

WE DID IT!!!!! July 10, 2009

What a journey this has already been.  Just Monday, I had about $600 left to go to reach my fundraising goal for the breast cancer 3-day.

Today, I couldn’t be more pleased to announce that thanks to my last two doners, Cory U and Molly G, I have MADE IT!!!!!!!

It has been difficult to ask for money, particularly from friends and family whom I know don’t really have extra to give.  The generosity has been amazing, and I even had two couple’s at Matts’ a few weeks ago open their wallets and each hand me $20.  They didn’t know me, all they knew is I was wearing my 3-day button, and had invited them to the Matts’ fundraiser.

It almost brought me to tears, becasue these folks just simply gave.  No receipt necessary, they just gave.  And hugged me on their way out.  So often, I am reminded of how crappy most people are.  So to have love and kindness and generosity spread from these four, just made my heart swell.

Thank you to each and every doner.  Every single dollar is making a difference in the lives of women everywhere.  Together, we will fight breast cancer to the bitter end.

I’ve been training, and will continue to do so.  Now that my goal has been reached, I can focus on helping my teammates, as well as focus on keeping my body in tip-top shape.  I’m planning on two back to back 10 mile walks this weekend, and luckily my trusty sidekick Ellie (oh yes and Kona) will be by my side.

Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you.

Introducing… The Rack Warriors!!!! June 4, 2009

Here we are: the Rack Warriors!  Our breast cancer three-day team completed ten miles as our first training walk last weekend.  Man oh man it was hot… the sun beat down on us, and I for one was not expecting to get so hot.  We walked out of Marymoore park in Redmond, along with hundreds of other cyclists, walkers, joggers, and roller bladers.  A few of the women I know from work, and a few I had never met before.  Let me tell you that at the end of this first walk, I felt a connection with my team.  Not only are we all joining forces to fight breast cancer, but we are committing to push our bodies and minds farther than many of us ever have before.  We got a few thumbs-up, and a few cheers along the way.  Please, if you haven’t made the time to donate yet, do so today!!!

3-Day Progress Report May 7, 2009

Okay, so I haven’t been so great about walking lately.  Between some nasty weather, a few out of town trips ( including an amazing anniversary weekend on Whidbey Island with the best husband ever) I just haven’t been sticking to the plan.  But today I made sure to fit it in, and Kona and I did a long lap around the lake.  Although I am experiencing low dull pain in my back nearly every day, the major muscle spasms seem to be over, and I’m also trying to work in an hour massage every month, along with my weekly chiro appointments.  The 3-day just keeps getting closer, and it is really time to start some major training.  I’ve got to get motivated, and far more committed to daily walks.

On a fundraising front, thanks to: TJ and Paula in the Bay Area, my sister-in-law Robin in southern California, my best bud Ellie, and Cameron ‘s grandma Gee Gee, I am now at……

64%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so close, and completely confidant that I will reach my goal by August 15th, 2009.

The RACK WARRIORS will also be hosting a befefit at Matt’s Rotisserie on July 16th!  More details to follow

Almost half way! April 23, 2009

Thanks to my wonderful neighbor and friend Barbie, as well as my mom in California, I am now at 49%!!!!  This means that I only have about $1200 left to go in meeting my fund-raising goal for the breast cancer three day www.the3day.org!!  A few of my teammates got together last weekend for a little 4-5 mile walk in Kirkland.   Although a bit windy, the day was pretty nice, and I brought Kona along for the fun.  I had a great time with my team, and the walk was a piece of cake.  Afterwards, Dur and I shared a glass of wine, and chatted it up for a few hours in her new home.  It was wonderful to have time to talk and relax together.  We commented later that we already know so much more about one another.  She is an amazing woman, and I am very proud to have her on my team.  This is already turning out to be a great decision to do the breast cancer walk.

Breast Cancer 3-Day Update April 13, 2009

Well, my back has had alternate plans for my breast cancer three day training.  Instead of sticking to my 10 mile/week average, I have spent a few weeks completely out of commission.

But, thanks to my amazing chiropractor Dr. Al, I think this is my comeback week.  I’m getting ready for a single lap ( 2miles) and looking forward to lifting some light weights.  I just have to take things slow, and really listen and pay attention to my body.  This whole back thing has really forced me to pay much closer attention, take better care of myself, and prioritize things like exercise.  I also have to ice every night, and do stretching too.  Plus, I simply cannot do some of the things I was used to doing: carrying heavy items, bending over to pick something up off the floor, bending across tables to take something away, etc.  I have to sit up straight, and walk with good posture too ( just straightened up in my chair as I’m typing).  Anyway, the good news is that if I take care of myself, my scoliosis will not get the best of me.

And on a really positive note, I have reached 40% of my goal!  Lets see… I don’t think I’ve thanked my sister-in-law Katie in Tulare, Ca. or my mother-in-law Bev in San Diego yet.  Everyone has been so generous, and I’m very proud of nearly getting half way.  Please take a moment to visit www.the3day.org and search Summer Hopkins to donate, and to learn more about the walk.  Also, we have room left on our team for anyone who would like to join a dedicated group of women fight breast cancer.

28% April 2, 2009

I am so impressed!  Thanks to friends and family, I have reached 28% of my goal for the breast cancer 3-day!  A very big thank you to Dad and Sally in California, as well as Aunt Ann in Arizona!

I have to admit, with the snow/slushy rain outside, Kona and I did not take our ritual 4 mile walk today.  I just couldn’t muster up the strength.  And, to make matters a little more complicated, I did a vigorous workout, and did a little damage to my healing back.  But, walking is one of the greatest things I can do, says my chiropractor-miracle worker Dr. Al at Sammamish Chiropractic.  Lucky for me I have a standing appointment on Wednesdays, so tomorrow he can fix me right up!  My team-members and I are considering an 8-mile this Saturday, and hopefully my back is up to the challenge!

Keep those donations coming, I still have a ways to go!!!
